{{/presale}}A sought-after classic and historically-significant American coin, the Morgan Silver Dollar has long been one of the most prized and rare items on the collectors’ market. Some of the rarest pieces are those with uncirculated grades, the specimens that have escaped the wear of circulation or being melted down for their constituent silver, and some of the rarest of the rare come from the long-defunct branch mint at New Orleans. Coins with that provenance from 1884, for example, and that have a Mint State grade of 64, have a survival estimate of just barely more than 85,000 coins. Provident Metals draws on that limited supply to offer the 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin for online purchase.
Highlights:
This 1884-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coin comes in a tamper-proof protective plastic slab labeled to show its PCGS-certified grade of Mint State 64. This means a coin of average luster and strike with scattered hairline scratches and contact marks — a few of which might appear in prime focal areas — and an attractive overall eye appeal. The team at Provident Metals fully insures each shipment.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse field features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, accompanied by the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1884.” Thirteen decorative stars appear at the rim.
Reverse
The reverse side is dominated by a heraldic eagle, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This is joined by the “O” mint mark and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
First minted in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Morgan Silver Dollar was closely identified with the “Wild West,” issued during a peak period of settlement and prospecting and the creation of the legendary mythos of the frontier gunslinger. It was particularly appreciated at the time of issue for its size and a substantial amount of silver content, and remained in circulation for many years as they were gradually lost to the vicissitudes of time. The coins issued by the New Orleans Mint became particular rarities, sometimes called the “lost” Morgan dollars because of their relative obscurity among collectors, but they became prized acquisitions for investors in the know.
