{{/presale}}When the US Treasury discovered large numbers of uncirculated Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars in its vaults in the 1960s, one of the most significant date marks found in the bags of silver dollars was the 1884 release. The 1884 mintage at Carson City was just 1.136 million coins, the vast majority of which ended up in US Treasury vaults right after coining at the mint and never left for almost a century. Provident Metals currently has GSA 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available to purchase online.
Highlights:
When you buy these 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins at Provident Metals, you will receive specimens that are still in the original packaging the Government Services Administration used during its auction of Morgan Dollars held in the 1970s and early 1980s. Each coin comes with a hard plastic holder, a presentation box, and a Certificate of Authenticity identifying its mint of issue and uncirculated nature.
Obverse
Lady Libertys left-profile portrait graces the obverse side of 1884-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. This effigy of Liberty was created by George T. Morgan for this series and used throughout its production life from 1878-1904 and 1921. The design includes 13 stars, an inscription of E Pluribus Unum, and the 1884 date mark.
Reverse
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found in the reverse design of 1884-CC Morgan Dollars. This design was also developed by George Morgan and features a front-facing bald eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. The inscriptions on this field read United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar, and CC. The mint mark is located beneath the feathers of the eagle and above the letter D in the word dollar.
History
The Government Services Administration, or GSA, was brought in to audit the collection of Morgan Dollars found in Treasury vaults in the 1960s. It determined that 95% of the stash came from the Carson City Mint. Many of the Carson City Mint coins were never released to circulation, instead going right to Treasury vaults. The GSA found a total of 962,000 1884-dated Morgans in the stash of coins, a figure that accounts for an astonishing 85% of the total mintage from 1884.
