{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar was minted during a time when U.S. silver policies led to a surplus of coins. The Bland-Allison Act required the Treasury to buy and mint large amounts of silver, resulting in millions of silver dollars that were rarely used and instead stored away. Today, you can find certified 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coins available at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin available here is graded MS64 and comes sealed in a protective plastic slab. This grade means the coin has average luster for its age, a number of small grouped contact marks, and possibly a few heavier marks or short hairlines. The PL, or proof-like, label reflects the mirror-like surfaces seen on both sides of the coin.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Coin, youll find a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty. This design was created by George T. Morgan and shows Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown resting on her head. The inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1883.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1883-O Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features a heraldic eagle, also designed by Morgan. The bald eagle appears with outstretched wings, holding arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both defense and peace. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the O mint mark.
History
The 1883 Morgan Dollar was part of the series continued production at four mints across the U.S., with each mint showing its own production trends. Philadelphia had the highest output that year, while Carson City struck the fewest. The New Orleans Mint, where this coin was made, issued more than 8.7 million pieces.
