{{/presale}}The Morgan Silver Dollar is a classic and iconic American coin highly prized in collectors’ circles, a historic coin that was first issued in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the settlement boom on the frontiers of the so-called Wild West was reaching its height. The coin became identified with that semi-mythic period of American history and was popular during its original issue due to its size and its considerable silver contents. As these coins grew rarer over the years thanks to the attrition of circulation wear and as pieces were melted down for their precious metal content, some of the rarest came from the Philadelphia Mint in 1883. The 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin is now available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin comes in a secure plastic holder with a label to confirm its NGC-certified grade of Mint State 64: a coin with an average strike and luster, scattered contact marks, and hairline scratches that may appear in prime focal areas, and an overall attractive eye appeal. Provident Metals insures every shipment against any chance of damage or loss in transit.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse field features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, along with the lettering “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1883.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of America’s founding states.
Reverse
The coin’s reverse field shows a heraldic eagle clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons, accompanied by the lettering “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The history of silver coinage in late 19th-century America is a curious and complicated story of the debate over whether bullion coins had a place in the nation’s circulation currency. By the late 1870s, it had resulted in laws that required specific amounts of silver to be purchased and struck into coinage every month. The U.S. Mint responded to these laws with the Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by the Assistant Engraver George T. Mason, which went on to become an enduring symbol of American identity and a specific period in the nation’s history.
