{{/presale}}The Morgan silver dollar has been one of the most publicly famous items in numismatics ever since the astonishing discovery of a previously unsuspected hoard of these coins in the vaults of the US Treasury in the 1960s. Packaged, organized, and promoted for auction in the Seventies and Eighties by the General Services Administration, this hoard of more than three million coins became known as the GSA Hoard of Morgans. The most numerous coins represented bore the mark of the storied Carson City Mint, as with the 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin, now available to you from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
This 1883-CC Morgan Silver Dollar Coin ships in a protective plastic slab, carrying a label that identifies its grade of MS62 or Mint State 62 according to the standardized Sheldon scale of uncirculated coins. This grading from the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) — the world’s leading third-party coin grading service — specifies a coin with an acceptable level of eye appeal despite having potentially impaired luster and possible contact marks and hairline scratches in prime focal areas. Each shipment is fully insured against loss or damage by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The obverse side of the coin features Lady Liberty in profile and carries the inscriptions “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “1883.” Thirteen decorative stars at the rim represent each of America’s founding states.
Reverse
A heraldic eagle clutches a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons on the coin’s reverse. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
History
The Carson City Mint in Nevada operated for a relatively brief period in the 19th century, but is perhaps the most storied of American mints thanks to its association with the historic silver boom that helped drive the settlement of the West, not to mention the fact that some of the most famous of all the nation’s silver and gold coinage was struck there. Between 1870 and 1893, the mint struck more than a hundred gold and silver coins, including the majority of the silver dollars that would later be discovered in the GSA Hoard of Morgans.
