Obverse

These coins take their name from their designer, British engraver George T. Morgan. To create the design seen on the obverse, he recruited a Philadelphia schoolteacher named Anna Willess Williams to pose as Lady Liberty. Her portrait now adorns Morgan Dollars.

Reverse

The reverse features a heraldic eagle, clutching arrows and an olive branch in its talons. These traditional American symbols denote strength at peace and in war.

About GSA Morgan Silver Dollars

In November of 1962, during the US Treasury’s annual pre-Christmas inventory, a huge cache of uncirculated Morgan Dollars in their original mint bags were discovered after sitting forgotten in a vault for nearly a century. Collectors and dealers began exchanging silver certificates for $1,000 bags of these rare coins, until June of 1968 when Congress closed that lucrative window by announcing that silver certificates could no longer be redeemed for silver dollars.

Afterwards, the Treasury inventoried what was left of the silver dollar hoard and found 3,000 bags, which was about three million coins. Many of them carried the rare and desirable Carson City mintmark, including those within this product listing. The Carson City coins were packaged in hard plastic holders and the hoard was released through the General Services Administration (GSA) in the 1970s.

GSA Morgan Silver Dollars were offered with dates from 1878 to 1885 and from 1890 to 1891.
