Obverse

George T. Morgan’s artwork adorns the obverse side of the 1881 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, depicting Liberty’s bust facing left. This representation includes the presence of coronet and laurel wreath crowns atop Liberty’s head, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars encircling the design field. Inscriptions on this field read E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1881.

Reverse

Morgan’s design of the heraldic eagle graces the back of the 1881-S Morgan Dollar. Unlike some variations, this particular rendition excludes the US national shield but retains other familiar design elements like the arrows representing war and the olive branch representing peace. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the S mint mark.

History

The mint building used from 1874 to 1937, often referred to as the “Granite Lady,” is an impressive example of Classical Revival architecture. Designed by architect Alfred B. Mullett, it features a strong and sturdy granite facade, with ornate detailing and a prominent central dome.
