First introduced in 1878, the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin was the second-longest-running design on US silver dollars and the last one to see major circulation in the United States. The Carson City Mint was one of the first to issue Morgan Dollars after the 1878 introduction of the design and, aside from the Denver Mints one-year issue in 1921, issued the coins on the fewest occasions. Right now, you can buy 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals.

The coins in this listing come to you in an individual plastic flip. Coins in BU condition often have full, original mint luster, but can also feature flaws related to the production process that include minor contact marks, breaks in the luster, or even spotted surfaces. Please bear in mind that BU coins of this age may feature toning of the silver, a result of the natural oxidation process and a factor that does not impact the value of the silver.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is on the obverse side of 1881-CC Morgan Dollars. This bust of Libertys head comes from George T. Morgan and features a left-profile relief of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap on her head with a coronet crown and a laurel wreath on her head as well. There are 13 stars around the head of Liberty as well as inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY on the coronet crown, and 1881.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States features on the reverse field of 1881-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins. This design was also created in 1878 by George T. Morgan with a front-facing bald eagle. The eagle is set with its wings spread and its talons clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions on this side read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

The Carson City Mint issued Morgan Dollar Silver Coins in two waves. Continuous coining started in 1878 and lasted through 1885. From 1886 to 1888, no coins were issued at the Carson City Mint. From 1889 to 1893, production resumed until the closure of the mint in 1893.
