{{/presale}}Embrace the rich history of the 1880 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, now proudly offered at Provident Metals! The United States Mint introduced these iconic coins in 1878, featuring the masterful design by George T. Morgan, which replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar.
Highlights:
From 1878 to 1904, the United States Mint consistently issued the Morgan Silver Dollars. Initially, coins were struck in Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco. After the Civil War and Reconstruction, the New Orleans Mint resumed operations and joined the minting process a year later.
Obverse
The captivating obverse design of the 1880 Morgan Dollar Coin presents a bust of Lady Liberty, masterfully captured in left-profile relief. The design by George T. Morgan portrays Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, coronet crown, and a laurel wreath on her head, adding a touch of elegance and symbolism. Inscriptions include E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY, and 1880.
Reverse
On the reverse, George T. Morgan’s creation displays the majestic heraldic eagle of the United States. The eagle is depicted in front-facing relief with its wings outspread, while its talons firmly hold the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, symbolizing the nation’s strength and desire for harmony. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR.
History
While Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans continued to strike the coins annually until 1904, Carson City produced them until 1885, and then again from 1889 to 1893. Additionally, the Denver Mint briefly participated in the minting process during the 1921 revival of the Morgan design. However, it was only Philadelphia and San Francisco that struck the coins every year during the 28-year period.
Ordering
These 1880 Morgan Dollar Silver Coins are available in MS63 condition. Coins with this grade may show some impaired mint luster, scattered contact marks, a few heavier contact marks, and small patches of hairlines that are visible to the naked eye.
