Obverse
The obverse of the 1879 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin features the elegant Lady Liberty, beautifully crafted by George T. Morgan. Her left-profile relief showcases a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath, symbolizing freedom and strength.
Reverse
As for the reverse design of the 1879-CC Morgan Dollar Coin, it showcases the majestic heraldic eagle, another masterpiece by George Morgan. The front-facing bald eagle holds the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons. Beneath the wreath on this side, you’ll find the remarkable “Capped Die” flaw represented by the CC mint mark, making each coin truly unique.
History
A Capped Die coin is a true marvel for collectors and history aficionados alike. Upon close examination of the reverse side above the CC mint mark, you’ll notice a captivating feature resembling two “caps” above it. This unique characteristic emerged from the mint’s use of a worn, rusty die during production. As a result, the original mint mark required re-punching to correct the crust accumulation, creating this extraordinary visual effect.
