Obverse

The obverse of the 1878-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles displays a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. James B. Longacre’s design portrays Liberty with her hair pulled back in a bun, wearing a coronet crown. The design is encircled by 13 stars, with the date placed at the bottom. The inscriptions include only LIBERTY and 1878.

Reverse

The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States, which underwent three design changes between 1850 and 1907. The 1878-S coin carries the Type III design, marking the change from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS in the denomination inscription. Other inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the S mint mark.

History

In response to the California Gold Rush, the U.S. Mint introduced the Double Eagle to expand the nation’s gold coin offerings. The Liberty Head design adorned these coins from 1850 until 1907, when the Saint-Gaudens design took over until the series ended in 1933.
