History
The 1878 Morgan Dollar was the first silver dollar issued by the United States Mint since 1873. The coin was designed by George T. Morgan, a British-born engraver who was hired by the Mint in 1876. The coins were struck in 90% silver and 10% copper and were intended to be used in everyday transactions.
In the Redfield Hoard, some 400,000 silver dollars were found among the 400 bags of silver dollars behind the false wall of his basement. Among those dollars were both Morgan Dollars and Peace Dollars.
