In 1878, a new era in silver dollar coining in the United States began. After issuing the Seated Liberty Dollar from 1840 to 1873, the US briefly halted the production of silver dollars amidst the halt in free silver coining in the country. In 1878, silver dollars returned with a new design known as the Morgan Dollar Silver Coin. Right now, you can purchase 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins online from Provident Metals in certified condition.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1878-CC Morgan Dollar depicts Liberty. This iconic 19th-century portrait of Liberty offers a left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap on Libertys head, as well as the coronet and laurel wreath crowns. The design field includes 13 stars with inscriptions of E PLURIBUS UNUM, LIBERTY on the coronet, and the date mark of 1878.

Reverse

On the reverse face of 1878-CC Morgan Dollar Silver Coins, you will find the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States. One of the few designs to lack the US national shield, the image does still set the eagle in front-facing relief with spread wings as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, ONE DOLLAR, and the CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint.

History

Opened in 1870, the Carson City Mint was one of three mints to issue Morgan Dollars during the 1878 debut year. Carson City would go on to strike coins annually through 1885. The mint suspended all operations from 1886 to 1888, resuming production in 1889 and striking coins until its closure in 1893.
