{{/presale}}The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the more sought-after silver dollars from American history, though it was not greatly appreciated in its day. In fact, the Morgan Dollar and other designs of the day were so unpopular that it led to a redesign in the early 1890s for many of the nations major bullion coins. Right now, you can buy 1878-1904 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in Fine condition online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
With your purchase of an 1878-1904 Morgan Silver Dollar coin in this listing, the item you receive comes with a protective plastic flip. Each of these coins is in Fine condition. The original designs and lettering are still easily visible, but the coins will show moderate to heavy wear with some weakness in the overall design. When you purchase multiples through this listing, please be aware you might receive several matching date marks from the 1878-1904 range or varying different ones. This will be determined by availability in our vault at the time your payment is processed and your coins are picked for shipping.
Obverse
On the obverse side of Morgan Silver Dollar coins is a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Her figure as featured here is based on Anna Willess Williams who sat through portrait sessions with designer George T. Morgan to create this bust of Liberty. She wears her hair in a loose bun with a coronet crown and a wreath crown in her hair. Inscriptions include E Pluribus Unum and the date mark on this face of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse face of the Morgan Silver Dollar comes with a unique design of the American heraldic eagle developed in 1878 by George T. Morgan for the Silver Dollar. The design depicts only the American bald eagle, without the heraldic shield, as it clutches arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other.
History
George T. Morgan was British by birth and had previously sought employment with the Royal Mint of England. Finding no jobs available, he came to America to work as an apprentice at the Philadelphia Mint and eventually created the design of the Silver Dollar when it was reintroduced into production in 1878. The design became synonymous with his name and remains known to this day as the Morgan Silver Dollar. It was produced from 1878 to 1904 and again 11 months in 1921.
