Obverse

The obverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features a portrait of Lady Liberty designed by James B. Longacre in 1849. This design shows Liberty in a left-profile wearing a coronet crown surrounded by 13 stars. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1877.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins features the Type III design. Initially, the coins had the Great Seal of the United States without the national motto and the denomination as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. In 1877, the Type III design altered the denomination to DOLLARS instead of D. Additional inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the S mint mark.

History

In 1877, the United States Mint produced the $20 Liberty Double Eagle at three different mints. During the Civil War and Reconstruction Era, most of the coin production occurred at the San Francisco Mint. In 1877, the San Francisco Mint produced 1,735,000 coins, while the Philadelphia Mint and the Carson City Mint produced 397,650 and 42,565 coins, respectively.
