{{/presale}}James B. Longacre designed the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1849, taking inspiration from Christian Gobrechts earlier designs. The Liberty Double Eagle remained on the $20 Double Eagle for the longest period. Right now, certified 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin from Provident Metals comes in a plastic slab with an AU55 grade, which stands for About Uncirculated. These coins show extremely light or just trace signs of friction on the highest points and can have medium to nearly full mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse design of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Longacre in 1849, this left-profile bust shows Liberty with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars around her portrait. The inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases the Great Seal of the United States. The 1877 Double Eagles have the Type III reverse design. The heraldic eagle emblem received the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” with the Type II design in 1866. The Type III, introduced in 1877, features a change from “TWENTY D.” to “TWENTY DOLLARS” for the denomination. The full inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
In 1877, the United States was nearing the end of the Reconstruction Era, which lasted from the end of the Civil War in 1865 until about 1878. During the Civil War, the US Mints production shifted to the San Francisco Mint and Carson City Mint. Production remained higher out west during Reconstruction, with the San Francisco Mint producing the largest number of 1877 Liberty Double Eagles.
