Obverse
On the obverse of the 1877-S Liberty Double Eagle, you will see a left-profile relief of Lady Liberty. This design, created by James B. Longacre in 1849, depicts Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars. The year of issue is found at the bottom. The inscriptions read LIBERTY and 1877.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Type III design. This depiction includes the bald eagle in front-facing relief, accompanied by the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch symbolizing peace. The design includes a ring of 13 stars and the national motto. Full inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
The 1877 issue marked the debut of the Type III reverse design. From 1850 to 1866, the US Mint utilized the Type I reverse featuring only the Great Seal with 13 stars. From 1866 to 1876, the Type II design was employed, which incorporated the national motto. In 1877, the Type III reverse was introduced, which changed the face value inscription from TWENTY D. to TWENTY DOLLARS.
