{{/presale}}The Liberty Gold Double Eagle holds a special place in American numismatic history as the first of two design series for the $20 Gold Eagle from the United States Mint. First introduced in 1850 and struck until 1907, it had a longer lifespan in circulation compared to its successor, the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Designed by James B. Longacre, this coin remains an essential American gold piece. Right now, 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin available here is in Mint State 60 condition. These coins exhibit an impaired mint luster with visible contact marks and patches of hairlines. They may have been certified by either the PCGS or the NGC. We guarantee the coin and grade, but not the specific grading service or label design.
Obverse
On the obverse side, the 1877-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle features a bust of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1849 by James B. Longacre, this left-profile relief shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by stars, with the date positioned at the bottom. LIBERTY is inscribed on the coronet crown and 1877 is beneath the bust.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins, you will find the Type III design. This design showcases a bald eagle with the US national shield, alongside arrows of war and an olive branch for peace. The eagle’s wings stretch out, connected by rays of sunlight, while a ring of 13 stars is present overhead. Inscriptions in full read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
The 1877 release of the Liberty Gold Double Eagles is significant because it introduced the Type III reverse design. Prior to this, the US Mint had changed the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 to include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, leading to the Type II design. The Type III design debuted in 1877 with the denomination altered to read TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.
