{{/presale}}The Liberty Double Eagle made its debut in 1850, following the California Gold Rush that brought vast amounts of gold to the U.S. Mint. This coin is historically significant as the largest denomination gold coin ever produced by the United States Mint. Right now, 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins in About Uncirculated condition are available from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each of these 1877-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins is presented in About Uncirculated (AU) condition. AU coins typically display only light signs of wear, mostly on the highest points of the design, and often maintain much of their original mint luster.
Obverse
The obverse of the 1877-S Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She is shown with her hair tied back and a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY” adorning her head. In addition to the word Liberty, the date mark of 1877 is found on this side.
Reverse
On the reverse, the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. This design includes a bald eagle with a shield on its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows. A ring of 13 stars appears above the eagle, and this years coin was among the first to feature denomination spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS instead of the previous TWENTY D. Additional inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TWENTY DOLLARS, and the S mint mark.
History
The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was designed by James B. Longacre, who was the Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint in 1849. The first coins were struck as proofs, with the Liberty Double Eagle entering circulation in 1850. It quickly gained popularity and remained a staple in American commerce until 1907.
