The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was introduced by the United States Mint in 1850. As the fourth denomination in the series, it became the largest coin denomination struck for circulation by the US Mint. The Double Eagle had only two design variations during its history, with the first created by James B. Longacre. Now, 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with a Closed 3 are available online at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Double Eagle Gold Coin features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. She wears a coronet crown, and 13 stars encircle the edge of the coin. Inscriptions on this side read LIBERTY and 1873.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins displays Longacres unique heraldic eagle design, known as the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle is shown front-facing, clutching arrows and an olive branch, with the US national shield on its chest. Above the eagle is a ring of 13 stars with the national motto engraved within. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.

History

The 1850 introduction of the Double Eagle required a new design by James B. Longacre, then Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He took inspiration from Christian Gobrechts designs on other Eagle coins, adding his unique touches to the Liberty image and creating a distinct reverse design.

Ordering

These 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins are graded Very Fine 35, indicating light wear with visible details. The Closed 3 in the 1873 date mark on the obverse features tighter curls.
