{{/presale}}The Liberty Double Eagle is a key piece of American numismatic history. Introduced in 1850, this $20 gold coin was the highest denomination circulated by the US Mint. Featuring James B. Longacres Liberty Head bust, it was produced from 1850 to 1907. Provident Metals is proud to offer the 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin with a Closed 3.
Highlights:
Each 1873-S Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin offered here is graded Very Fine 30. This grade indicates medium or light wear, with the main details of the design still clear. Very Fine coins rank between 20 and 35 on the Sheldon Numeric Scale, and these coins are near the top of this range. The Closed 3 designation highlights the compact form of the 3 in the 1873 date.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 1873-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin, you’ll find a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Longacre in 1850, Liberty is shown wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1873.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1873-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin features the Great Seal of the United States. Also designed by Longacre, this side shows a front-facing bald eagle with the US national shield. The eagle holds the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace, with a ring of 13 stars and the national motto above its head. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, TWENTY D., and the S mint mark.
History
The Double Eagle series is distinct, featuring only two designs over its lifespan. Unlike other denominations that began in 1794/95 and saw multiple redesigns, the Double Eagle started in 1850 and maintained Longacre’s design until 1907, followed by Saint-Gaudens’ from 1907 to 1933.
