The $20 Liberty Head gold double eagle was first issued in 1849 as the nation sought higher-denomination coins following the California Gold Rush. With large amounts of newly mined gold entering circulation, this denomination filled a vital role in American commerce. The design came from Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and features Liberty with a coronet crown. Today, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with the Open 3 date variety are available through Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet with the word LIBERTY inscribed. A circle of 13 stars surrounds her image, representing the original states. Beneath her portrait, the year of issue is included, serving as the date mark. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1873.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin displays the Great Seal of the United States. This heraldic image features a bald eagle with a shield on its chest. The eagles talons hold both arrows and an olive branch. This Type II reverse version includes the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle and the inscription TWENTY D. as the denomination. Additional inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

History

During 1873, Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco struck Liberty Double Eagles, with more than 2.7 million coins combined. Philadelphia struck the largest share, over 1.7 million pieces, while San Francisco produced more than 1 million. The coins featured here are Open 3 coins, so named for the wider, more open shape of the numeral 3 in the date on certain dies.
