The Double Eagle was the largest denomination of gold coinage ever issued by the United States for regular use. First minted in 1850, the $20 Double Eagle came about as the United States Treasury was flush with gold from the California Gold Rush. The Liberty Head design was the first to be featured on this denomination and remained the longest in use. Now, 1873 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins with an Open 3 are available from Provident Metals.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins, you will see James B. Longacres depiction of Liberty. This left-facing profile shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown with a ring of 13 stars around her. The date is located at the bottom of the field.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins showcases the Great Seal of the United States. This includes a heraldic eagle with the national shield, arrows of war, and an olive branch of peace. Above the eagle, 13 stars form a ring that includes the national motto.

History

The 1873 Liberty Double Eagles were minted with both Open 3 and Closed 3 date styles. The Open 3 design features a more distinct separation between the top and bottom parts of the number 3 in the 1873 date. In total, just over 2.5 million Double Eagles were struck in 1873. Philadelphia issued the highest volume at 1.709 million coins, while Carson City issued the fewest at just 22,410 coins.
