Obverse

The obverse of the 1873 Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coin features Lady Liberty in a portrait designed by James B. Longacre. This left-profile bust, inspired by Christian Gobrechts designs, shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown and is surrounded by 13 stars. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1873.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1873 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin displays the Great Seal of the United States. This includes a bald eagle with the US national shield, holding arrows and an olive branch. The national motto is set within a ring of 13 stars above the eagle’s head. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and TWENTY D.

History

The Eagle, Half Eagle, and Quarter Eagle were among the first coins issued by the US Mint in 1794 and 1795, valued at $10, $5, and $2.50 respectively. The Double Eagle, introduced in 1850, is a $20 coin and the largest denomination ever circulated by the US Mint.
