{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Introduced in 1849 during the height of the California Gold Rush, the $20 Liberty Head double eagle was issued to meet the countrys growing need for higher denomination coins. The piece was created by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and is admired for Libertys portrait wearing a coronet crown. Today, Provident Metals has 1870 Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coins available in AU53 condition.

History
The Liberty Head double eagle series ran from 1849 through 1907 and was struck at five different US Mints, including Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver. Total output numbered in the tens of millions, though yearly mintages varied widely depending on gold supplies and economic trends. For example, production in some Civil War years was more limited, while later western discoveries encouraged larger mintages.
