Confederate States dollar banknotes were issued by a variety of different engravers and printers, including individual banks. The notes were not backed by hard assets and were often funded by banks or wealthy individuals. Among the issuers of Confederate States banknotes were the Southern Bank Note Company of New Orleans, Louisiana, Archer & Daly, a lithographic firm in Richmond, Virginia, and Keatinge & Ball of Columbia, South Carolina. Keatinge & Ball notes are some of the most common survivors, with most notes issued after Keatinge & Ball relocated to Richmond, Virginia.

History

Confederate States dollars were rendered useless at the end of the Civil War when the Union refused to recognize the notes or the debts of the Confederacy.
