Obverse
John C. Calhoun is featured in the lower-left of the 1862-1863 $100 Confederate Currency Note. This effigy of Calhoun depicts the former US Representative and US Senator from South Carolina, as well as the former two-term Vice President of the United States. The central design vignette captures a common, offensive design found on Confederate dollars: images of slaves. The lower-right depicts a female allegory for the Confederacy.
Reverse
Most $100 Confederate Currency Notes have a blank field. The Confederacy was rushed to put money into circulation and used a variety of private banks and companies to print its paper notes. As such, the reverse of the notes was often left blank on purpose.
History
Confederate States dollars were hand-cut after printing, often resulting in uneven edges and easy margin splits. The notes also have handwritten signatures from a Register and Treasurer. It is also common for the serial number and printing date to be written in by hand. The John C. Calhoun $100 note design was the most commonly issued of its denomination in the 4th Series. some 670,400 of these notes were produced.
Authorized by the Act of April 17, 1862, the Confederacy issued $170 million in Confederate States dollars, with an additional $5 million worth released following a September 23, 1862, amendment.
