In order to satisfy debts incurred by the Union during the Civil War, the U.S. Treasury began printing legal tender notes for circulation in 1862. These notes are also known as United States notes and were originally printed in the classic large-format style. This allows for a greater degree of sophisticated artwork across the surface, which makes legal tender notes among the most beautiful paper currency ever printed in the U.S. Right now, you can buy Very Good 1862 $10 Legal Tender Notes online at Provident Metals.

Note Highlights:

  • Ships to you in a PMG plastic currency sleeve!
  • Historic note from the Civil War!
  • Vintage large format style!
  • Bears a face value of $10 (USD) backed by the United States.
  • Graded Very Good 8 by the Paper Money Guaranty.
  • The obverse field depicts Abraham Lincoln.
  • On the reverse side, there is denomination and obligation information.

All 1862 Legal Tender Notes are fully insured by Provident Metals while in transit. We deliver straight to your door and use non-descript packaging for added security. These notes have been certified as Very Good 8 by PMG and will arrive in currency sleeves that feature this information. Under this official VG8 designation, you can expect the notes to show significant signs of circulation. Some flaws could include missing pieces, stains, and splits. The texture of the paper will also be somewhat limp.

Obverse

A portrait of Abraham Lincoln is featured on the obverse of these Legal Tender Notes. For historical context, Lincoln was president when these notes were originally issued to satisfy Union debts. The obverse also features a red Treasury seal on the left side. In the center of the note, there is a bald eagle flying toward the left. And on the far-right side, there is an illustration of a woman dressed in a flowing gown.

Reverse

Denomination and obligation information is located on the reverse of $10 Legal Tender Notes. The obligation details are in the center and confirm the notes as official legal tender for all debts public and private. However, it excludes duties on imports and interest on public debt. The denomination is featured numerically on either side of this text. There is also a lovely symmetrical pattern that fills out the background.

History

Issued by the Treasury rather than the Federal Reserve, legal tender notes are considered the longest-running currency program in the nations history. With no interest attached, these notes were printed for circulation between 1862 and 1971 in both the classic large format and the modern small size.
