The Seated Liberty Half Dollar series was produced by the United States Mint from 1839 through 1891 and remains one of the most recognizable coins from 19th-century American history. With more than 50 years of production, the series includes numerous dates, mint marks, and small design changes that make it an interesting pursuit for collectors. The 1861 issue is especially notable, as it was struck during the first year of the American Civil War. Right now, certified 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Coins are available at Provident Metals.

All 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Coins available here are graded Mint State 62 by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Small groups of contact marks are common, and a few larger nicks may appear in key areas of the design. Light hairlines are also expected on coins in MS62 condition.

Obverse

On the obverse of 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollars is Christian Gobrechts classic depiction of Liberty seated on a rock. Liberty is shown wearing flowing robes and holding a shield in her left hand, symbolizing the nations strength. In her right hand, she holds a pole topped with a liberty cap. Around the rim of the coin are thirteen stars, while the date appears centered along the bottom. The inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1861.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin displays a heraldic eagle with wings spread wide. The eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch, representing the nations readiness for both war and peace, and a shield rests on its chest. The outer inscriptions identify the country of issue and the coins denomination. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and HALF DOL.

History

The 1861 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is closely tied to an important year in the nations story. As the Civil War began, coins like this one were produced during a time of uncertainty and change. Because of this historical setting, the 1861 issue often draws attention from collectors who appreciate coins connected to major events. Specialists also study this date for its various die pairings and production details.
