Obverse
The obverse side of the 1857-S Liberty Double Eagle Gold Coin showcases a captivating left-profile depiction of Lady Liberty adorned with a coronet crown, encircled by 13 stars, and the date mark at the bottom. Inscriptions include LIBERTY on the coronet and 1857.
Reverse
Turn the coin over to reveal the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse side. History
The wreck of the SS Central America was rediscovered in 1988 by a team led by Thomas G. Thompson, a renowned oceanographer. The ship was found approximately 200 miles off the coast of South Carolina, resting at a depth of around 7,200 feet (2,200 meters) below the surface.
