{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}The 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle is a gold coin issued during a key moment in U.S. history, right in the midst of the California Gold Rush. As gold flowed into the national economy, mints across the country ramped up coin production. That year, the New Orleans Mint struck just 14,500 of these $10 gold coins, a much smaller quantity than other facilities. Today, collectors and gold investors can find 1856-O $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins available through Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each of these 1856-O $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coins is housed in a plastic slab and has been graded as About Uncirculated 50. These coins show only light wear on the high points of the design and still have much of their original luster. The limited mintage and Southern origin make this a noteworthy coin for both collectors and those interested in U.S. Mint history.
Obverse
The obverse design on the 1856-O Liberty Eagle Coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty created by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed with the word Liberty, and her hair is tied back with curls flowing down. Surrounding her are 13 stars for the original colonies, and the year of issue appears at the bottom. Inscriptions include LIBERTY and 1856.
Reverse
The reverse of 1856-O $10 Liberty Gold Coins features a heraldic eagle, also designed by Gobrecht. The eagle faces forward with a shield over its chest and holds arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This Type I design, used before the national motto was added, also includes an O mint mark to show it was made in New Orleans. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TEN D.
History
While the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints had larger outputs in 1856, the New Orleans Mint operated on a smaller scale, producing fewer Liberty Eagles. Its role was to provide coins for Southern states using gold that was often sourced from nearby regions. Political and economic shifts led to irregular production schedules, making coins like the 1856-O issue more scarce compared to others from the same period.
