{{/presale}}The Republic of Texas enjoyed a decade-long existence as a sovereign state between its independence from Mexico and its annexation by the United States of America. During this time, the Republic of Texas issued Texas dollars in the form of paper notes. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase Fine+ 1839-1841 $20 Republic of Texas Notes online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Republic of Texas resorted to issuing paper notes in 1839 for a number of reasons. President Mirabeau B. Lamar backed the release of the notes to finance the republics debt. Additionally, prior to the circulation of paper notes in Texas, private banknotes from US states, American gold coins, and American silver coins were accepted as currency in Texas. With no sources of silver or gold within its borders, Texas never ended up coining its own hard currency. Paper notes were the best option.
Obverse
On the obverse of these 1839-1841 $20 Republic of Texas Notes are various images depicted through the field. At the top-center of the design field, you will notice a woman standing near a seated indigenous figure. Between the two is a shield with the Lone Star of the Republic on it. The left side of the note has an image of an indigenous archer, while the right side of the note has a depiction of Minerva or Athena, the mythological goddess of war in Roman and Greece, respectively. You will find the signature of President Lamar on these notes, as well as the Treasury Secretary for Texas.
Reverse
The reverse face of the 1839-1841 $20 Republic of Texas Note comes with a red-ink print of the De Zavala Star. Otherwise known as the Lone Star of the Republic, the five-pointed star has the letters spelling out TEXAS between its points.
History
Though it has never been confirmed, some historians suggest the burnt orange colors of the University of Texas-Austin came from the back of the Republic of Texas Notes. The notes were known as redbacks for the use of red ink on the reverse field. However, the ink was found to have been low quality and easily faded with time to take on a burnt orange hue.
