{{/presale}}The Kennedy Silver Half Dollar coin is one of a handful of American coin designs from the 20th century still in production today with little to no changes made to the obverse or reverse. The Kennedy Half Dollar was conceived of in the weeks following his assassination in November 1963 and a design was churned out into production by March 1964. Available for one year with 90% silver content, the Kennedy Half Dollar had a brief period of production in the 1960s with 40% silver content as well. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase a $100 Face Value bag with 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Kennedy Half Dollar designs are unique in American history in that President Kennedy actually approved their appearance. Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro had previously created these images in 1962 for the Presidential Medal Series and President Kennedy had given each its personal approval. The availability of designs allowed the US Mint to quickly create the images for the Kennedy Half Dollar program just four months after his death in November 1963.
Obverse
On the obverse of 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars, you will find the Gilroy Roberts left-profile bust of President John F. Kennedy. It captures the president with inscriptions of Liberty above his head, In God We Trust below his neck, and a date mark at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse design of the 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars comes with a modified version of the Presidential Seal based on the heraldic eagle of the United States. It includes the American bald eagle with the national shield, olive branch, and arrows of war, but also features a ring of 50 stars around the eagle representing the US states.
History
The Kennedy Half Dollar debuted in March 1964 and was one of the last US coin denominations with 90% silver content. While all other denominations halted the use of silver with 1965 date marks, shifting to a cupro-nickel alloy, the Kennedy Half Dollar actually continued from 1965 to 1970 with 40% silver content. This included 60% copper for the balance.
