{{/presale}}The shortest-lived US Quarter design of the 20th century was the Standing Liberty Quarter. Created during the massive overhaul of US coin designs in 1916, the image was only used on the quarter through 1930 and eventually replaced by the design still in use today of President George Washington, the first-ever President of the United States of America. Today, you have the chance to buy 90% Silver Standing Liberty Quarters at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Standing Liberty Quarter design was created by Hermon Atkins MacNeil and accepted by the US Mint in 1916 as a replacement for the Barber Coinage design on this denomination. The image was not well received by the public though and would only be in use for 14 years in total before the quarter program was suspended for one year in 1931.
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 90% Silver Standing Liberty Quarter is a depiction of Liberty with a shield in her left hand and an olive branch in her right as she stands in the gap between two walls. The design was adopted when World War I was raging in Europe and was meant to symbolize the neutrality of the US and its desire for peace. Liberty looks to the right, or heraldic east, in the design with her shield on that side to defend against hostility. In her right hand, heraldic west, she holds an olive branch symbolizing that American desire for peace.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 90% Silver Standing Liberty Quarters features a simplistic image of an American bald eagle. Here, the national bird is featured gliding in flight with its wings flapped up behind its figure.
History
The Standing Liberty Quarter designs underwent several minor variations during its short 14-year run. The Standing Liberty image on the obverse had three types issued. Liberty original had a bare chest, but in 1917 had a chain mail chest plate added.
