Design

These 10 oz Silver Antique Queens Beast The Unicorn of Scotland Statues depict the famous Unicorn of Scotland. The powerful, masculine heraldic beast of the Scots is shown here seated on its hind legs. The beasts front legs dangle over the shield bearing the Royal Arms of Scotland, what is today known as the coat of arms of Scotland. The shield features a single rampant lion, a symbol that dates back to King Alexander II, King of the Scots. The Unicorn wears a crown around its neck with a chain connected to the crown that has been broken from its anchor, showing the freedom of Scotland.

History

The Unicorn of Scotland came to the Royal Arms of England with the ascension of King James VI, King of the Scots to the throne of England. When Queen Elizabeth I died in 1603 without an heir, James VI was the only blood relative left to the House of Tudor as his mother was the cousin of King Henry VIII. James VI ascended to the throne as King James I of England, Ireland, and Scotland. He unified the crowns of the two kingdoms in his personal being.

With his ascension to the throne, the Royal Arms of England was quartered to include the Lion of Scotland in two quadrants, the Harp of Ireland in one, and a quadrant that was quartered itself with the Three Lions of England and the Lilies of France.
