Design
The 10 oz Silver Antique Finish Queens Beast The Lion of England Statue available to you in this product listing has a beautiful, modern rendition of the Lion of England. Based on the statue from James Woodford present at the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, this design shows a lion seated on its haunches with its forepaws raised in support and defense of the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom.
The Royal Arms is an emblem of the monarchy, as well as the kingdom. The shield supported by the lion is a quartered design with three individual coat of arms designs. The first and fourth quadrants boast the Three Lions of England image. The second quadrant has the Lion of Scotland design. The third quadrant has the Harp of Ireland image. The lion is shown with the Imperial State Crown on its head.
History
King Richard I adopted the Three Lions design as the first official Royal Arms of England in 1198. The lion was a popular animal in the heraldry of the Middle Ages and came to England with both early Danish invaders, as well as the House of Plantagenet. The Lion of England is the only animal in the heraldic beast range with a crown on its head, symbolizing its prominence in the Royal Arms.
