Obverse

The $10 Liberty, also known to numismatists as the $10 Coronet type, displays a female portrait of Liberty on the obverse. She is depicted wearing a crown (hence the “Coronet” nickname) with the word “LIBERTY” displayed prominently. Thirteen stars (as a nod to the original thirteen American colonies) are engraved towards the periphery. The coin’s date appears at the bottom. This design was first introduced in 1838 and remained in production until 1907. As such, the $10 Liberty ranks among the longest-running coin designs in American numismatics.

Reverse

The $10 Liberty reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The bird wears a shield and clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons. This symbolized America’s interest in maintaining peace, combined with its ability to defend itself in war. Shortly after the Civil War, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” was added above the eagle’s head; coins dated before 1866 will not show this inscription. The denomination is expressed as “TEN D.” and appears towards the bottom.

About the $10 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin

The $10 Liberty Eagle was one of the most commonly-used coins of 19th and early 20th centuries. It served as a mainstay of American commerce. Until the $20 Double Eagle was released in 1849, the $10 Eagle was the U.S. Mint’s highest denomination. Not only was the coin used by private individuals, but the $10 Eagle was also favored by banks and financial institutions for large transactions. Many governments, including those in Europe and South America, chose the $10 Liberty Eagle for their official sovereign reserves.

These $10 Liberty Eagles are in Almost Uncirculated (“AU”) condition, meaning that they show just the slightest signs of handling. They exhibit complete design detail, solid original mint luster, and excellent eye appeal. Many pieces have the overall look of Uncirculated or Mint State examples, but technically grade Almost Uncirculated due to the presence of some extremely minor wear. Collectors are drawn to AU coins since they have the appearance of a higher grade but are much more affordable.

The coins in this category will have a random year of issue depending on our current inventory.
