{{/presale}}The last US circulation denomination to adopt the modern cupro-nickel alloy was the US half-dollar coin. From its initial introduction until 1964, the half dollar had 90% silver content. However, in 1965 when all other coins adopted cupro-nickel alloys, the Kennedy Half Dollar continued for several more years with 40% silver content. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase a $10 Face Value bag of 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Kennedy Half Dollar Coins contained 40% silver content from 1965 to 1970. It was the last US denomination to use any silver content. All other denominations in the US began using a cupro-nickel alloy in 1965. The Kennedy Half Dollars in this listing contain 40% silver and 60% copper.
Obverse
On the obverse face of the $10 Face Value 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars is a left-profile bust of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States of America. This portrait was created by Gilroy Roberts and has featured on the half-dollar coin from 1964 to the present day.
Reverse
The reverse field of the 40% Kennedy Silver Half Dollars in this $10 Face Value bag comes with a modified Presidential Seal. Created by Frank Gasparro, the image includes the American bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, a cluster of 13 arrows in one talon, and an olive branch of peace in the other talon. A ring of 50 circles is featured around the seal and inscriptions read United States of America and Half Dollar.
History
President John F. Kennedys bust on the Half Dollar coin is the only one ever approved by a president directly. While all US Presidents featured on denominations in the modern era were placed on those coins long after their death, President Kennedys portrait was placed on the half dollar just four months after his assassination. He had previously approved the design early in his presidency because it was created for the Presidential Medal issued during his time in office prior to his death.
