{{/presale}}The Battle of Thermopylae is one of the most infamous clashes from Antiquity. At a site known to the Greeks as the hot gates, King Leonidas of Sparta led 300 of his elite warriors and a supporting force of 6,700 additional Greeks against the might of the Persian Army and its nearly 150,000 soldiers. The Molon Labe Silver Round Series from Intaglio Mint offers glimpses of the gruesome nature of ancient warfare in a series of new obverse designs. Today, you have the chance to get 1 oz Silver Molon Labe Rounds online from Provident Metals.
Highlights:
The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC and lasted a total of three days. The invading Persian Army was met at the hot gates by Leonidas and his elite Spartan warriors, as well as an additional force of Greeks. The terrain around the hot gates eliminated the need for Leonidas smaller force to meet the large Persian Army on the open field. It funneled the Persians into a small mountain pass where the Greeks could meet the Persians in similar numbers at any given time.
Obverse
Spartans and Persians are depicted in hand-to-hand combat on the obverse side of 1 oz Silver Molon Labe Rounds. The design shows soldiers with spears, swords, and other short blades engaged in brutal combat in an effort to win. While Persia assumed it would win the day, the Greeks knew their ultimate fate, but were determined to exact a terrible cost on the Persians and make the battle take as long as possible. Inscriptions on this side include only MOLON LABE.
Reverse
The Intaglio Mint logo is found on the reverse field of Silver Molon Labe Rounds. The mint logo is in the small central field with the words INTAGLIO MINT and EST. 2010 inscribed around it. The larger background field has a swirling, radial line pattern that extends out to the edges of the round. The outer rim of the design field has inscriptions of ONE TROY OUNCE, .999 FINE SILVER, and MMXXI, the date mark of the release in Roman numerals.
History
The outcome of the Battle of Thermopylae was a victory for the Persians. The entire Spartan delegation at the battle, including King Leonidas, was eliminated during the course of the three-day battle. However, while the Greeks lost some 4,000 soldiers in total, the Persians lost an estimated 20,000 soldiers. Later in 480 BC, the Greeks soundly defeated the Persians at the Battle of Salamis, a naval engagement. The next year, the Greeks decisively beat the Persian Army at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Persian invasion of Greece.
