On the obverse of the Silver Colorized The Wild Polar Bear Round, youll notice a large polar bear standing on a shelf of ice as the sun sets behind it, filling the sky with soft shades of color. Polar bears are well-suited to life in the Arctic, with a thick, double-layered coat and hollow, translucent guard hairs that help direct sunlight down to their dark skin for added warmth. A deep layer of blubber helps with insulation and buoyancy in cold waters, while their wide pawsmeasuring up to 12 inches acrossserve as natural snowshoes on ice and strong paddles while swimming. History

In North America, polar bears live throughout the circumpolar Arctic regions, including areas of Alaska and Canada, and can sometimes drift toward the northern United States on sea ice.
