Coins may arrive in an individual flip or in tubes of 20 or 25, with the tube count depending on the date range. Earlier issues are packed in tubes of 20, while newer releases come in tubes of 25.
Obverse
On the obverse of all British Britannia Silver Coins, youll see the reigning British monarch for that coins year. Coins from 1998 to 2015 show Ian Rank-Broadleys fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Jody Clarks final portrait of Elizabeth II appears on some 2015 coins and all 20162022 issues. Following Queen Elizabeth IIs passing in September 2022, Martin Jennings first portrait of King Charles III began appearing on Britannias in early 2023.
Reverse
The reverse of all Britannia 1 oz Silver Coins shows Britannia. She wears a Corinthian helmet, holds a trident symbolizing command of the seas, and carries a shield with the Union Jack to represent defense of the nation.
History
When the Romans moved into the British Isles, the region was called Britannia. Over time, Britannia became known not only as a place but also as a personified figurean image of a guardian watching over the islands. In 1987, the Royal Mint introduced a bullion series featuring Britannia as its main design. Gold coins came first, with the Silver Britannia following in 1997. Early Silver Britannias (19972012) were struck in .958 fine silver; starting in 2013, the coins shifted to .999 fine silver and have continued with that standard.
