{{/presale}} {{#promotion_on}}Among the more distinctive designs found in silver bullion, the Aztec Sun Stone continues to stand out for its historical importance and detailed appearance. Its circular layout and layered symbols translate well onto silver, offering a product that appeals to both investors and those interested in ancient cultures. These bars provide a way to own a piece inspired by one of the most recognized artifacts of Mesoamerican history while still holding intrinsic silver value. Today, 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bars from SilverTowne are available online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Each 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar is packaged individually in a plastic flip, with multiples offered in acrylic tubes of 20. The design on these bars is based on the well-known Aztec Calendar Stone, also called the Sun Stone, an important piece of Mesoamerican history.
Design
In the obverse design of the Silver Aztec Calendar Bar, the full image of the Sun Stone is shown in detail. This design includes many symbols tied to Aztec beliefs and their view of time and the universe. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, surrounded by four panels representing earlier worlds that were believed to have ended in destruction. Around these are the 20 day-signs of the Aztec ritual calendar, along with rays of sunlight, symbols tied to wealth such as jade and turquoise, and two fire serpents known as Xiuhcoatl that form the outer border. On the reverse of the 1 oz Silver Aztec Calendar Bar, you will find a partial view of the Sun Stone design, continuing the same detailed imagery from the obverse. The inscriptions on the obverse include ONE TROY OUNCE and 999 FINE SILVER.
History
Following the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521, led by Hernn Corts, many cultural artifacts were hidden or buried. Spanish authorities attempted to suppress indigenous traditions, and the Sun Stone was placed beneath what is now Mexico Citys main square, the Zcalo. It remained hidden there for more than two centuries before being rediscovered.
