{{/presale}}The nations capital city, the District of Columbia, is uniquely handicapped when it comes to setting its own legislation. This was evident in the battle to legalized recreational cannabis sale, use, and possession in the federal district as the local government battled the federal government for control over the process. Today, you have the opportunity to get 1 oz Silver Antique Legalized Collection Washington D.C. Rounds online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Washington D.C. took steps in 2014 to legalize recreational cannabis, but was met by the restrictive efforts of the federal government. Washington D.C. is uniquely positioned in having a local government, but not actually controlling all of its land area. Roughly 29% of the District of Columbias land is under the control of the federal government. This includes the National Mall, West Potomac Park, and Rock Creek Park. Despite the legalization of cannabis use and possession by the local government, because cannabis remains illegal on the federal level, the roughly 18 square miles of land controlled by the feds is still restricted when it comes to cannabis use.
Obverse
The obverse face of 1 oz Silver Antique Legalized Collection Washington D.C. Rounds includes the common design element of this series. Here, a cannabis leaf is shown with handcuffs on the leafs wrists, a symbol of the federal governments continued war on cannabis.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1 oz Silver Antique Legalized Collection Washington D.C. Rounds is a depiction of the seal for the District of Columbia. The symbol has been altered to include elements that point to the legalization movement in the district in 2014. Inscriptions include District of Columbia, Initiative 71, and the US national shield with 2014 Cannabis Omnibus.
History
Recreational cannabis was legalized in Washington D.C. through a ballot referendum during the 2014 midterm elections. However, commercial sales of cannabis remain illegal in Washington D.C. as the US Congress maintains oversight of the local government in the District of Columbia. As such, it prevented the local government from regulating cannabis sales in its jurisdiction.
