History

Numerous states across the US enacted prohibition laws regarding cannabis in the early 20^th century, with Oregon being a latecomer in the movement by outlawing cannabis in 1923 and enhancing its laws in 1935 to better align with the laws enacted by other states. Less than a half-century later, Oregon became the first to decriminalize cannabis when it did so in 1973. Oregon was the first to legalize medicinal cannabis when it did so in 1998 and then was the third to legalize recreational cannabis with the passage of Measure 91 in 2015.
