Reverse
Texian militia members gathered in Gonzales on October 2, 1835, to defend the community and its cannon from a Mexican military that wanted the cannon back. Here, Texian soldiers prepare to fire the gun as they defend their land against a Mexican military wary of rising revolutionary sentiment in several Mexican states of the era, including Texas. Shots fired from the Gonzales cannon represent the start of the Texas Revolution. Inscriptions include .9999 Silver One Troy Oz and Battle of Gonzales 1835.
History
In the 1830s, Texas was a state within the Mexican nation and colonists in the state included Mexicans, Texians, Americans, and other European settlers. The Mexican military gave Texians in Gonzales a cannon in 1831 to defend against Comanche raids. By 1835, revolution was on the horizon in several Mexican states as the nations political situation deteriorated. Texians refused to give the cannon back to the Mexicans and challenged them to come and take it.
