{{/presale}}There are few collectibles more coveted among precious metals enthusiasts than historic coins. As the decades and centuries pass, fewer and fewer of these specimens survive. While only six of the Oban gold ingots from Japans Tokugawa coinage of the 16th century, you can now own a modern replica commemorating the creativity and beauty of these coins. Today, you have the chance to buy 1 oz Gold Oban Commemorative Medals online at Provident Metals.
Highlights:
Prior to the rise of round, decimalized coins that were machine struck, Japan used a monetary system that consisted of three different tiers. The coins within these tiers were made from bronze, copper, and gold-silver alloys. The lowest coins in the three-tiered system were Mon coins, while hammered BU ingots were featured in the middle of the system. At the top of the tiers, the Koban and Oban.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1 oz Gold Oban Commemorative Medal comes with black script in Japanese and three diamond-shaped stamps. These stamps are known as Kiri and are finished with a hand-applied red ink, as is the black script.
Reverse
On the reverse field of Gold Oban Commemorative Medals, you will find an additional Japanese script that has also been finished with hand-applied black ink. There is a noticeable gold plug on this side, a feature that ensures the 1 Troy ounce weight of the gold coin. The bottom includes modern inscriptions of 1 TROY OUNCE and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
The Oban was the largest denomination within the aforementioned three-tiered system. One individual Oban was worth 10 Koban, the other largest denomination in the system. Today, only six specimens are estimated to exist and the most recent auction of one of these specimens came in April 2021, with that specimen selling for more than $1.9 million.
