Historically, tigers were found throughout the Korean Peninsula, covering both North and South Korea, as well as parts of northeastern China and the Russian Far East. Since 2018, KOMSCO has honored the tiger with a yearly series of gold medals. The 2024 edition is the last in this series. Right now, the 1 oz Gold 2024 South Korean Tiger Medals are available at Provident Metals.

Obverse

The obverse of the Gold 2024 South Korean Tiger Medal depicts the majestic tiger. The design features the tiger in a left-profile relief, leaping from the foliage in a hunting stance. The lake formed in the crater of the shield volcano can be seen in the background. Inscriptions on this side include KOREAN TIGER, 2024, 1 OZ, and HALLASAN.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1 oz Gold South Korean Tiger Medal features the Korean peninsula. This design outlines the peninsula with letters from the Korean alphabet, a theme consistent since the series began in 2018. The inscriptions include REPUBLIC OF KOREA and FINE GOLD 999.

History

This year’s design shows the tiger on Jeju Island within Hallasan National Park. Hallasan, a shield volcano, is Koreas tallest peak, reaching over 6,300 feet. Tigers have held significant cultural and symbolic importance in Korean folklore, art, and literature, representing strength, bravery, and power.
