Barber Dimes are those US Dimes produced at the United States Mint between 1892 and 1916. The coins are known as the Barber Dimes, part of the wider Barber Coinage, because US Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber designed the images used on both the obverse and the reverse of the coins. Today, you have the chance to purchase $1 Face Value 90% Silver Barber Dimes in Very Good + condition online at Provident Metals.

The Barber Dime was in production at the United States Mint from 1892 to 1916. The coin shared the obverse design of Liberty that Charles E. Barber created in 1892. The coins of the Barber Coinage were not particularly popular with the American public and all three coins had new designs introduced in 1916. The Barber Dime was replaced with the image of the Mercury Dime from Adolph A. Weinman.

Obverse

On the obverse side of the 90% Silver Barber Dimes is a depiction of Lady Liberty. Her bust is shown in right-profile relief with a cap on her head holding her hair up in a bun as she wears a wreath crown that is tied at the back of her head. United States of America and the date mark are included below.

Reverse

The reverse face of 90% Silver Barber Dimes comes with a design of the coins denomination and a simple wreath. The denomination is presented in text as the words One Dime, while the wreath surrounds the entire inscription.

History

The Barber Dime was the only one of the three coins in the Barber Coinage to feature its own reverse design. While all three denominations had the obverse Liberty image, only the dime did not use the heraldic eagle. The smaller surface area of the dimes made it difficult to use the heraldic eagle in great detail, so the US Mint and Barber went with a simpler design element.
