The US Half Dollar produced between 1892 and 1916 is known as the Barber Half Dollar. It comes from the broader Barber Coinage, the term applied to the US dime, quarter, and half-dollar denominations designed by Charles E. Barber, the then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Today, you have the opportunity to purchase $1 Face Value lots of 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars online from Provident Metals.

Charles E. Barber was the sixth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint and served from 1879 to his death in 1917. Barber actually succeeded his father, William Barber, in the role of Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He designed a uniform Liberty bust for the obverse of the dime, quarter, and half dollar, with a shared design for the quarter and half dollar and a unique design for the dime.

Obverse

Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of all 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars. Liberty is shown in right-profile relief with a wreath crown on her head and a cap containing her hair. The national motto of In God We Trust is inscribed along the top rocker of the coin with the date mark below. The left field has six stars and the right seven stars.

Reverse

For the reverse design field, Barber created the image of the heraldic eagle of the United States based on the Great Seal of the United States. This image includes an American bald eagle with the national shield on its chest. One talon clutches an olive branch while the other holds a cluster of 13 arrows. The ribbon in its beak reads E Pluribus Unum and there is a random cluster of 13 stars above its head. Inscriptions include United States of America and Half Dollar.

History

90% Silver Barber Half Dollars are available with mint marks if struck by the Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, or San Francisco Mint. The mint marks would be located below the eagle on the reverse, if present, and include either a D, O, or S, respectively.
