Design

The obverse of the Colorized Washington D.C. Goldback Gold Note depicts Columbia standing at the forefront, with the U.S. Capitol Building positioned in the distance behind her. Columbia has long been shown in American art as a representation of national ideals, often holding items meant to symbolize the values of the country. In this image, she holds both a shield and a sword. The shield represents defense, stability, and the safeguarding of liberty. The sword reflects strength, readiness, and the ability to protect freedom when necessary. Together, these elements reflect a nation built on principle while remaining prepared to defend its independence.

History

Washington D.C. was formed from land provided by both Maryland and Virginia along the Potomac River. Its placement was chosen with the intent of creating a capital city located between the northern and southern states. President George Washington selected the location and appointed Pierre Charles LEnfant to design the city plan. The government officially moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. in 1800, though the city remained unfinished and continued to develop slowly over the following decades.
